Description of Scenario
The implementation of a digital strategy in machine and plant development has been a central focus of partner FILL work for many years, ranging from virtual commissioning and data technology production monitoring to automated condition monitoring solutions in the service area. In connection with modern database, infrastructure and communication systems, the goal is to achieve self-organisation through intelligent and networked machines and means of production (cyber-physical systems, Internet of Things). FILL occupies a key role in process automation and data organisation for complex manufacturing facilities and has the necessary human resources and infrastructure to implement automated production lines. The project-specific priorities are the data technology preparation of machines, the development of IT infrastructure and the provision of machine and production data from linked process flows.
Pledger will leverage Fill Cybernetics, the next evolutionary step of partner FILL’s digital solutions. Cybernetics is an Industrial Internet of Things platform that focuses on the transformation of data to smart data and the integration of these smart data in the new smart digital engineering process.
Pledger Benefits and Impact
Distributing data and computations across the edge and cloud might have the following benefits:
- Rich data sets for better machine learning: For machine learning applications, a large dataset with high quality is essential. Centralising data and consolidating machine data in a cloud therefore is a necessary basis for sophisticated machine learning. Pledger will enable FILL to evaluate which data should be consolidated in a cloud and which data should stay at the edge.
- High performance computing: Edge devices have limited computation power. Running software in the cloud allows FILL to perform computationally intense analysis or machine learning. Pledger will enable FILL to experiment with cloud computing and determine novel applications.
- Security: The edge solution of cybernetics is isolated from the internet and runs locally close to FILL machines. Moving data and computation to the cloud imposes security challenges. Edge devices have limited computation power. Running software in the cloud allows FILL to perform computationally intense analysis or machine learning. As part of Pledger, FILL will develop a strategy that ensures a secure and trusted communication between edge devices (FILL customer side) and cloud services (FILL side).
